Privacy of Employee Emails

As email has become a popular tool for business and organizations to use to reduce costs and increase productivity, there have been unseen consequences of employee also using the email. Privacy of employee email is affected by various factors, ranging from organizational policy to user interface design. The main issue with email privacy is not privacy itself but how employees perceive their emails to be private. When organizations implement email policies the perceived privacy for employee’s decreases and this may affect their performance in the workplace. Though having no email policy or not disclosing the policy may result in court action to solve the dispute, this is not only expensive but timely process. Many of the current email clients which employees use for their email messages give the employee a false sense of privacy due to the way the application is designed. Many of the user interfaces which are used can be deceiving to the employee. User interface design is also affected by the technology itself and therefore may provide to be a larger issue to be solved. Author
